perspective: Why biogeography matters: historical biogeography vs. phylogeography and community phylogenetics for inferring ecological and evolutionary processes

چکیده

Phylogenetic and phylogeographic approaches have become widespread in evolutionary biology, ecology, and biogeography. However, analyses that incorporate inferences from historical biogeography (e.g. timing of colonization of a region) may be essential to answer the most important large-scale questions in these fields, but they remain infrequently used. I focus on two examples here. First, I argue that understanding the origins of biodiversity hotspots (and other high-diversity regions) requires comparing the timing of biogeographic colonization and diversification rates among regions. In contrast, phylogeographic studies (analyses within species

A Latitudinal Diversity Gradient in Terrestrial Bacteria of the Genus Streptomyces

UNLABELLED We show that Streptomyces biogeography in soils across North America is influenced by the regional diversification of microorganisms due to dispersal limitation and genetic drift.Streptomyces spp. form desiccation-resistant spores, which can be dispersed on the wind, allowing for a strong test of whether dispersal limitation governs patterns of terrestrial microbial diversity. We emp...

The role of molecular genetics in sculpting the future of integrative biogeography

We review the expanding role of molecular genetics in the emergence of a vibrant and vital integrative biogeography. The enormous growth over the past several decades in the number and variety of molecular-based phylogenetic and population genetics studies has become the core information used by biogeographers to reconstruct the causal connections between historical evolutionary and ecological ...

Phylogeographic Diversity of the Lower Central American Cichlid Andinoacara coeruleopunctatus (Cichlidae)

It is well appreciated that historical and ecological processes are important determinates of freshwater biogeographic assemblages. Phylogeography can potentially lend important insights into the relative contribution of historical processes in biogeography. However, the extent that phylogeography reflects historical patterns of drainage connection may depend in large part on the dispersal capa...

Is biogeography emerging from its identity crisis?

Biogeography has had an unusually protracted identity crisis (e.g. Brown & Lomolino, 2000; Donoghue & Moore, 2003), although the discipline took on a relatively ‘modern’ look well over a century ago – the thoroughly ‘modern’ observations of Alfred Russel Wallace have been discussed elsewhere (Funk, 2004), and Joseph Dalton Hooker’s views about floristic histories across lands of the southern he...

River drainages and phylogeography: an evolutionary significant lineage of shovel-nosed salamander (Desmognathus marmoratus) in the southern Appalachians.

All models of speciation involve some mechanism for the separation of biological populations that eventually leads to the formation of new species. In the case of aquatic species, biological evolution is often coincident with geological evolution, because populations can become geographically isolated among river systems as drainage morphologies evolve. Thus, for species that are completely res...
